Palliative Care Tips
Ref: JR, spec. Palliativmedicin
Set an agenda with the patient. Get a good start: Ask the patient to introduce the agenda.
”What do you want to take away from your visit today?”
Allow and help the patient to pinpoint (ie prioritise) the timeframe to go over the complete visit agenda.
Ask: Anything else? Again, and again, and again.
Explain your own agenda: ”What do I want to tell the patient today that needs to go onto the visit agenda?”
Propose a compromise. Ask for feedback on suggested agenda before proceeding. Establish rapport.
Never(!) be afraid to include relatives’ questions onto the agenda.
Always ask the patient for allowance.
